Abstract

Candidiasis is a disease that exists all over the world, this disease can affect all ages, both men and women. The main source of the causative agent is Candida sp., with transmission that can occur through direct contact or fomite. Candida fungus has been known and studied since the 18th century causing diseases associated with poor hygiene. The name Candida was introduced at the Third International Microbiology Congress in New York in 1938, and was standardized at the Eight Botanical Congress in Paris in 1954. Candida albicans causes candidiasis worldwide with slight differences in disease variation in each area. This research is a laboratory experimental study with a research design Posttest Only Control Group Design. The goal of the study was to prove the effectiveness of green betel leaf ethanol extract (Piper betle L.) as antifungi using disc diffusion methods. Extraction using 70% ethanol solvent with maceration method carried out for 5 days. Data analysis using Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney. Based on phytochemical tests, green betel leaves contain flavonoid, tannins, and essential oils compounds that are considered effective in inhibiting the growth of microbes, especially Candida albicans. Obtained extract yield of 20.32%. Antifungi testing uses concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, positive control of 200 mg ketoconazole tablets and negative control of aquades. The results of the 75% extract concentration antifungi test resulted in a fairly high average of 29.23 mm. The positive control of the 200 mg ketoconazole tablet produced an average of 15.99 mm of bland power while the negative control of aquades lacked bland force against Candida albicans. Based on statistical analysis of data shows that the three concentrations of 25%, 50% and 75% have antifungi power and the most effective is the concentration of 75%. Key words : green betel leaves, maceration, diffusion disc, Candida albicans
