Abstract

Acne medication containing synthetic antibiotics can cause various side effects such as irritation and resistance. Sirsak leaves (Anona muricata L.) contain alkaloid, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, triterpenes or steroids that have antiinflammatory and antibacterial effects that potential as antiacne. The traditional use of sirsak leaves required a long preparation time so it is necessary to have preparations that are more practical and durable in storage. The gel preparation was chosen because it gives a cooling sensation to the skin and was easy to apply on the skin. Gelling agent affects the stability of the gel. Physical stability test aims to show that the preparation is stable during distribution and storage. This study aims to determine the concentration of HPMC (Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose) which produces a stable gel preparation and the results of the physical stability of the gel obtained. The research carried out is experimental. Gel preparations were made with a concentration of 12% sirsak leaf extract and variations of Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose concentrations of 2.5%, 3% and 3.5%. The Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose concentration was determined by trial and error. Each formula was made and tested for physical properties which included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, adhesion and spreadability. The results of the sirsak leaf extract gel stability test were obtained stable for cycling test including organoleptic, homogeneity, viscosity, adhesion and dispersibility. The pH of the gel was stable for cycling test for the concentration of Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose 2.5% and 3.5%, but in the formula with a concentration of Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose 3% the pH of the gel was unstable for cycling test. Keyword : Formulation and stability, gel, sirsak leaf extract, HPMC (Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose)
