Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the differences in osteocalcin levels in rats subjected to orthodontic treatment with brackets and varying traction forces. Osteocalcin, a bone-specific protein, serves as a marker of bone formation activity. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: a control group (no orthodontic treatment), a group with bracket placement and a light traction force, and a group with bracket placement and a heavy traction force. Orthodontic appliances were applied to the maxillary incisors of the treatment groups. After four weeks, blood samples were collected to measure serum osteocalcin levels using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results showed a significant increase in osteocalcin levels in both treatment groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the group with the heavy traction force exhibited significantly higher osteocalcin levels compared to the group with the light traction force (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that orthodontic force application stimulates bone formation, and the magnitude of the force influences the extent of this bone remodeling activity.
