Abstract
The wide use of styrofoam in various applications proves its practicality and superiority as a lightweight, leak-resistant and effective material for maintaining temperature. However, increasing the use of styrofoam has an impact on increasing styrofoam waste. One sustainable solution is to use Styrofoam waste as an additional material in asphalt concrete pavement mixtures. This study aims to evaluate the effect of substituting styrofoam waste into asphalt in AC-BC asphalt mixtures on Marshall characteristics and the impact of flow values on asphalt plastic deformation. The methods used for experiments at the Civil Engineering Laboratory at Kadiri University included asphalt testing, aggregate testing, GMM testing, and Marshall testing with variations in Styrofoam waste levels of 2%, 4%, and 6%. The research results showed that the addition of Styrofoam waste increased the VMA and VIM values proportionally, while the VFA value decreased. The stability and Marshall Quotient of the asphalt mixture increases with a variation in levels of 4%, while the flow value decreases with each additional level and is below the standard provisions, this shows that asphalt is not plastic but tends to be brittle. This research contributes to the understanding of asphalt modification with Styrofoam waste, emphasizing the need for careful consideration in the management of Styrofoam waste as a sustainable option for improving road service performance.
