Abstract
Plastic waste, especially polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from beverage bottles, is a serious problem in the context of municipal solid waste, which can cause significant environmental impacts without effective recycling. Previous studies show that the amount of plastic waste throughout the world continues to increase, reaching 300 million tons per year with growth of 4% every year. The aim of this research is to assess the impact of adding PET plastic on asphalt stability and to compare the performance of asphalt mixtures with and without the addition of PET plastic. The results of this research contribute to finding creative solutions to utilize plastic waste in the construction of road infrastructure, with a focus on increasing the stability of bitumen. Based on the research results, the use of garden stones as coarse aggregate shows positive VIM, VMA, VFB, Stability and Flow values. With an average VIM of 3.86%, VMA of 99.11%, VFB of 96.11%, highest stability reaching 7017 Kg, and average flow of 2.29 mm, it was concluded that the addition of PET plastic waste, especially PET plastic, as an asphalt additive, has stability above the specified minimum limit, making it very suitable for use on AC-WC road types. Based on research results, the addition of 5% PET plastic can be recommended for AC-WC asphalt concrete pavement because it reaches the optimum asphalt content in accordance with the 2018 Bina Marga specifications.
