Abstract

Sustainable and safe buildings are a major concern in this modern era. Selection of the right structural material is one of the important factors in achieving the sustainability and safety of buildings. This study aims to select and compare optimal structural materials to achieve building sustainability and safety. This study identified the types of structural materials commonly used in buildings, including concrete, steel, wood, and composite materials. The characteristics and sustainability performance of each structural material are analyzed by considering environmental aspects such as carbon impact, energy efficiency and recycling. In addition, the characteristics and safety performance of each structural material are also analyzed by taking into account strength, earthquake resistance, fire resistance, and resistance to natural disasters. Factors to be considered in the selection of structural materials to achieve building sustainability and safety are identified, including cost, availability, weather resistance, and maintenance requirements. Through a comparison between existing structural materials, useful information is provided to select the optimal structural material in achieving the sustainability and safety of the building. The results of this study provide useful insights in the selection and comparison of structural materials to achieve building sustainability and safety. This research is expected to assist architects, engineers, and other relevant stakeholders in selecting the right structural materials for sustainable and safe buildings, thereby reducing negative impacts on the environment and protecting occupants from security risks.
