Abstract

The importance of designing environmentally friendly homes for tropical climates, considering thermal aspects, especially natural ventilation and natural lighting, cannot be underestimated. Currently, the majority of residential houses are built with a focus on aesthetic aspects alone, without considering the environmental conditions and climate at the location. The purpose of this scientific paper is to design an environmentally friendly residential house for tropical climates, taking into account its thermal aspects. The design of the residential house is made by considering environmental aspects such as the existing site conditions, sunlight exposure, wind movement, and other environmental factors. All of these aspects are analyzed to fulfill the thermal comfort needs within the residential house.Passive design strategies are employed by applying natural ventilation and natural lighting methods in the building design. The minimum area of natural ventilation in a room is 10% of the floor area of that room. The analysis results indicate that the optimal building orientation is facing east-west, while the best opening orientation is facing north and south, as this allows stable sunlight penetration throughout the day.To mitigate high solar radiation, greenery is planted around the building to provide shade and cooling. Pivot windows are used to create a cooling effect in the rooms by maximizing air circulation. Lower ventilation is positioned directly beneath the windows to address high humidity, and additional ventilation is placed between the roof and ceiling to expel hot air.To create natural coolness within the building, the distance between the new building and existing structures is arranged to allow free airflow in the building area. This will ensure good air circulation within the residential house.By considering these aspects, an environmentally friendly residential house design can achieve thermal comfort in a tropical climate.
