Abstract

With variations in compaction time, concrete with better compaction will have lower porosity. Lower porosity will result in denser and stronger concrete, because the concrete particles will bond better and provide higher strength. The mechanical strength of concrete is greatly affected by its porosity. A good compaction process will produce concrete that is denser and denser, so it can withstand loads better. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of variations in compaction time on the porosity and mechanical strength of concrete in order to improve understanding of the quality of the concrete produced. In this study, it was found that the optimum compaction time for concrete with a mix design of f'c 30 MPa and 50 mm slump was 20 seconds, with the highest compressive strength reaching 37.16 MPa. There is a significant effect between the difference in compaction time on the compressive strength of concrete, where 97% of the effect can be explained by the type of polynomial line Y = -0.0249x² + 1.0587x + 25.717. Reducing the optimum compaction time results in a significant decrease in the compressive strength of concrete, while increasing the compaction time does not result in a significant decrease. Therefore, concrete needs to get the right compaction time to ensure homogeneous compaction and avoid honeycombs so that the compressive strength of the concrete remains optimal.
