Abstract

Poverty is an issue that reflects the level of community welfare and poses a serious challenge in various regions, including Kediri City. During the 2019–2023 period, poverty showed a fluctuating trend influenced by various factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, rising unemployment, and changes in human development. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Human Development Index (HDI) and the unemployment rate on poverty in Kediri City, both simultaneously and partially. The method used is a quantitative method with a multiple linear regression approach. Secondary data were obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for the past five years, from 2019 to 2023. Normality and F-tests were conducted to ensure the validity of the model and the influence of the independent variables on the dependent variable. The results of the study show that HDI and unemployment significantly affect the poverty rate. HDI has a negative effect, meaning that an increase in HDI can reduce poverty. Conversely, the unemployment rate has a positive effect, where an increase in unemployment tends to increase poverty. These findings indicate that poverty alleviation strategies should focus on improving the quality of education, healthcare, and job creation. Local governments need to take integrated and sustainable steps to enhance community welfare by strengthening HDI and reducing unemployment. Keywords: human development index, unemployment, poverty
