Abstract

Research on the stabilization of expansive soil using Rice Husk Ash (RHA) has produced varying results, making it difficult to determine the most effective proportion for improving Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS). Some studies suggest that 5% RHA provides the best outcome, while others report that 10% or 15% is more effective. These discrepancies may be influenced by soil characteristics, mixing methods, and material distribution. This study aims to evaluate the effect of RHA at 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% on the UCS of expansive soil after a 7-day curing period and to determine the optimal proportion. The UCS test was conducted following ASTM D2166 standards with three replications per variation to ensure accuracy. The results indicate that 5% RHA increased UCS to 242.53 kPa, a 3.32% improvement compared to the control (234.74 kPa). However, at 10% and 15% RHA, UCS decreased to 202.19 kPa and 186.33 kPa due to material segregation and increased porosity, which weakened the soil structure. ANOVA testing confirmed the effect of RHA variation on UCS (p-value = 0.000, F = 112.604), while Pearson’s correlation (r = -0.89) indicated a negative relationship between increasing RHA content and UCS reduction. This study establishes that 5% RHA is the optimal threshold for improving expansive soil stability, whereas higher proportions tend to reduce soil strength. Keywords: Pozzolan, rice Husk Ash (RHA), expansive soil, Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), soil stabilization.
