Abstract

Loose sandy soil has low bearing capacity due to high porosity and weak inter-grain bonding. This condition poses a significant challenge in shallow foundation design, as it risks excessive settlement and structural instability. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Enzyme-Induced Carbonate Precipitation (EICP) method based on soybean extract in improving the bearing capacity of such soil. Treatment involved a single application of injecting 9 liters of EICP solution into sandy media using a two-phase method. The ratio of urease solution (from soybean powder extraction) to cementation solution (1 mol/L urea and 1 mol/L CaCl₂) was 1:1, with a total concentration of 22.24% by dry weight of sand. Testing included axial static load tests (ASTM D1194) and direct shear tests (ASTM D3080). Results indicate that the ultimate bearing capacity increased by 272.7% (axial test) and 368.2% (calculation). Improved soil properties were also evident from cohesion values up to 13.78 kPa, an internal friction angle reaching 57.16°, and the soil unit weight increasing from 13.48 to 18.00 kN/m³. ANOVA testing (F(1,114) = 239.97; p < 0.001) confirmed a statistically significant effect of the treatment. It is concluded that the soybean-based EICP method is effective in improving the physical and mechanical properties of loose sandy soil and significantly increasing the bearing capacity of circular footing foundations.
