Abstract

Background: Metabolic syndrome is one of the increasing health problems today. The metabolic syndrome will increase the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. This disease is a health threat that requires a combination of drugs to treat various dysfunction disorders. Chemical drug therapy is not enough to cure or stop the progression of the disease. Rosella and bitter melon plants have activities as hypoglycemic and antilipidemic. Purposes: To determine the effect of a combination of rosella and bitter melon extracts in reducing fasting blood glucose levels and increasing HDL levels in metabolic syndrome model rats. Methods: The research design used was a completely randomized design (CRD) with the research sample divided into 5 treatment groups. Data analysis with paired T-test. The stages of implementation are conditioning of metabolic syndrome rats. Result: In group PII, there was a significant decrease in fasting blood glucose levels after intervention by 37.43% (p-value = 0.001). In group PII, there was a significant increase in HDL levels after the intervention of 48.95% (p-value =0.005) Conclusion: After receiving a mixture of rosella and bitter melon extracts, rats with the metabolic syndrome model had lower fasting blood glucose levels and higher levels of HDL. The next stage of the study was to determine the acute toxicity test of using rosella and bitter melon.
